Washington says “Thanks, but No Thanks” to McCain
Is it just me or did McCain’s idea to suspend his campaign and head to Washington end up making him look like a loser?
First of all, HOW LONG has it been since you’ve been in Senate, Mr. McCain? I applaud your idea to help, but having been out of the recent work and discussions among your fellow senators, isn’t it a TAD presumptuous to imply they need you?
Some fellow lawmakers said McCain hasn’t contributed much to the financial debate, and senior campaign advisers told CNN they believed it was politically crucial that McCain show up at the debate in Oxford, Mississippi.
A senior adviser to McCain agreed that McCain seemed to be hindering the negotiating process rather than helping it: “We understand that what we need to do is get McCain out of here, get him out of town, because the minute that McCain is somebody seen as brokering this, that’s going to kill it.”
Also, it seemed to me that McCain hadn’t even gotten off the plane before senators announced they had reached an agreement. HA!
Dave Grady replied:
Yeah, McCain hadn’t voted even a single time in the Senate since APRIL 2008.
And all of the sudden he’s needed? Please…
He just sat there for his photo op, and then (as your later post indicates) conspired with House Republicans to undermine the deal on the bailout.
That seems awfully political, doesn’t it?
Add to all of the above the following facts:
1) McCain campaign offices had not “suspended” their work. In fact, all were open… and many didn’t even know that their man had “suspended” his campaign.
2) McCain continued to run commercials throughout the US. Suspension, anyone?
3) McCain called Obama to discuss a joint suspension of activities, and after leaving a voice message, announced that he was doing this 15 minutes later regardless of what Mr Obama was doing. Grandstanding, anyone?
4) The bailout was so pressing that McCain hadn’t even READ the Paulson plan on Tuesday, the day before this “suspension.” The plan was a grand total of THREE PAGES. Too busy, sir?
5) After begging out of a Letterman visit because he had to go to Washington and, in his own words, “save the country,” he headed over to Katie Couric for an interview… and didn’t fly out until the next morning.
6) McCain “suspended” his campaign on Wednesday morning, yet couldn’t make it to Washington until Thursday.
7) Ahh, and then there’s his running mate, who had a highly publicized visit to the World Trade Center and a nice television interview… during the “suspension.”
I’m sorry, but you may have to suspend your disbelief on this one. McCain’s too busy grasping at straws.
